MS Access Password Recovery
MS Access uses underlying Jet Database Engine. Using AccessPassword you can recover passwords for any Jet database, not only Access' databases. Access password supports users passwords (most of competitive products do not).
Access Passwords
Please note that there are two password types in MS Access: user's passwords and database
passwords. User's password is always asked along with the user's name (usually when you
start MS Access). Database password is asked when you open your password-protected
database (user's name is not asked in this case).
IMPORTANT NOTE: system database is required for user's password recovery. If a system database is lost or damaged, Access Password can not recover user passwords.
There are two packages available: Access Password and Access Password Pro. Access Password can recover database passwords only. Access Password Pro is able to recover both database and user's passwords. Group membership information is recovered as well.
Broken databases
Our customers report about strange Access databases (v8.0). Databases seem to be password
protected but password recovery software (including Access Password) shows strange
password which is not accepted by Access. When analyzing these databases we found that
they were corrupted in a very specific and strange manner. There is well-known
auto-replace feature in MS Word, for example, Word replaces (c) sequence with the single
copyright character. In all broken databases reverse replacement was performed. 0a9h byte
is replaced with (c) sequence (ASCII 0a9h is a copyright symbol), 0aeh -> (r) and so
forth. As a result Access databases are broken and there is a little chance to convert
them back. If you open broken database with HEX editor you'll see for example '(c)' text
at offset 21h while 0a9h byte must be there. There is very poor chance to recover such
database.
